Why Volunteer in Yunnan?

While Yunnan is a very beautiful province with diverse people and cultures, its development has lagged far behind the coastal region of China. Yunnan’s geographic isolation and lack of industry has limited economic opportunity in many of the province’s counties. Because of this, poverty in Yunnan is pervasive in both the countryside and among the migrant worker community in the capital city of Kunming. The lack of economic opportunity has resulted in Yunnan having the most poverty stricken counties in China and has left many children in a position where they don’t have access to the kind of education necessary to escape the poverty they are growing up in.


Teach English to Children and Help Give Them the Skills They Need to Better Themselves

One of Volunteer Abroad Corps’ programs is with a local organization called Jiaxin Community that provides shelter and informal education to homeless children, deaf and mute children, and children from severely economically disadvantaged families. Volunteers in this program will primarily be teaching basic English but will also have the opportunity to teach or a recreational activity like playing guitar. A long term volunteer can even elect to spend more time with the kids watching movies or going swimming.

International volunteers spending time volunteering will broaden these children’s horizons and foster a curiosity in them about the world. Teaching them English will also help give them the skills they need to escape the poverty they are growing up in. Volunteering will not only be a rewarding experience for the kids but for you as well!
